Eating a full meal on the beach is something every person should experience at least once if not multiple times in their life. It’s not convenient. It’s certainly not comfortable. But man is it a good meal.
Everything tastes better at the beach!
Now that summer is here, here are some of my favorite beach food memories.
Seagull Sandwich Thief.
The title is pretty self-explanatory, but hilarious nonetheless.
One time on the beach, circa the mid-2000s, my family and I had a little beach day and packed sandwiches (obviously, the best beach food). My mom had a fully wrapped turkey sandwich in hand, and a seagull scoops down and scoops the sandwich literally out of her hands. It was wild. And they just flew away, never saw it again! We laugh about it now, as my mom always mentions that she put hot mustard on it, so jokes on the bird.
The Doritos Incident
Last summer, a group of friends and I had a full-on beach day, and went all out with the food. My good friend bought a big family-size bag of Doritos, which we opened and ate before going into the water.
Our entire group wanted to go into the bay, to which my good friend said, “We should probably hide the Doritos, the seagulls are gonna go crazy if we don’t.” to which I responded, “It’s fiiiinnneee, they’re not that smart! We’ll only be gone for like, 15 minutes.”
I kid you not, not even five minutes later, we’re waist deep in the water, and about 15-20 seagulls NOSE DIVE straight into this bag of chips. They were annihilated.
Our whole group is screaming and sprinting from the water, striving to save these Doritos; no survivors.
I have yet to live this down. If you’re reading this Dinah, I apologize.
The one time I crashed on the beach and then ate a taco.
You guessed it. This one is about the one time I crashed so hard at the beach (by myself, thank God for the elderly couple next to me watching my belongings), then ate a chicken fajita taco (leftover from the night before) from my tote bag when I woke up.
This sounded cooler in my head, but honestly, it was one of those moments where the simplest things can bring you so much joy.
a nap. and a taco.
The post-beach treat.
Now, this is a delicacy. Not always necessary, but sometimes the day doesn’t feel complete without one.
In North Padre Island, there are lots of cute local spots to grab something sweet or refreshing on the way home. And since it’s a beach area, everyone is completely desensitized to seeing tourists and locals alike partially clothed, sunburnt, or covered head to toe in sand. It’s fun!
Watching the sunrise on the beach was always something I cherished growing up. There was a small German bakery on the island my mom and I always loved going to. They now have closed up shop and relocated but had the best hearty pastries and biggest smiles.
But the best go-to’s? Smoothies or ice cream. I do not make the rules.
On the last trip to the beach, my mom and I went and found the coolest hole in the wall, gelato-joint. The worker implored us to try almost every flavor and gave us an extra portion to take home.
It was one of the best customer service experiences I had ever seen, as well as the best gelato I’ve ever tasted. Magnolia Grace Gelato y Mas, look ‘em up.
beach-food speed round.
clementines
sparkling water
turkey sandwiches
cucumber slices
apples slices
a bougie cracker
chips (specifically spicy or cheesy, maybe not at the same time)
grapes
capri-suns
As long as a handful of these are present, it’s a good beach day.
In conclusion, I want to go to the beach.
With love,
Cara
