Eating in (and not out?) New York
Think of this as a "What I ate while in New York" video....but in words.
I love to eat in, and I love eating in New York.
We know this! I’ve talked about it on multiple occasions.
At the same time though? Unless you live there, that’s not always an option.
New York is one of the biggest food hubs on a national and international level.
A few weeks ago, I was up visiting my boyfriend, David, for a couple of days, and the majority of the meals we stayed in and made at home. It was incredible.
We did eat out, don’t get me wrong! But when we ate out…we went out!
Prime example: The bougie Italian place we went to where we split one of the best pasta dishes of my entire life.
For reference, I’ve eaten a lot of pasta in my life, I’ve made a lot of pasta.
I think about this dish on a bi-weekly basis.
This is from Ella’s Taverna in Huntington, NY. Parpadelle with braised short rib, carrots, crispy shallots, and a beautiful gremolata, served with a gorgeous carrot salad with goat cheese and guanciale.
This dish: so incredibly rich, the most tender short rib I’ve ever tasted. Naturally sweet from the shallots and labor-loved ragu.
ALSO THE COLOR OF THOSE CARROTS?
Y’all, bear with me.
This entry is going to be so dorky. If you read to the end, you rock.
Speaking of pasta, that was the first meal to kickstart my little trip.
Here’s the food timeline!
Friday
David and I went straight to the store after getting picked up from LaGuardia and made a “stick to your ribs” simple pasta with parsley, parm, and lots of veg.
Saturday
The next morning before hitting up Manhattan (and every one of our plans falling through) we made a makeshift Shakshuka. Only note, more veg/staple ingredients, and needed a good piece of bread! Still delicious, still a solid meal.
After navigating said fallen-through plans, we stumbled on this little bistro outside the theatre district. We ended up splitting paninis and bowls of tomato, and red pepper soup. My bones were rejuvenated after walking around in 20-degree weather for two hours.
For dinner, we had makeshift leftover salads using ingredients from the night before, MAKESHIFT!
Sunday
We had breakfast out at a little diner called, “Grandma’s Kitchen”. Just good ol’ American breakfast diner food, you really can’t go wrong.
Except for the potatoes.
For some reason, shredded-style hashbrowns are only a Southern thing.
What’s up with that?!
For lunch, it was another leftover meal. Nothing to write home about.
Something that you should write home about (and I already have, and am doing right now) was Sunday’s dinner. Which was the Italian place from above.
NO NOTES. SO SO GOOD.
Monday
For breakfast…you guessed it we used leftovers to make a delicious breakfast hash.
I love hash. It’s so easy and cooking-friendly!
We got leftover Grandma potatoes, eggs, parsley, turkey bacon, and David’s hand.
For lunch, we ended up splitting a deli sandwich, which was mediocre. Probably the worst meal of the trip, but could’ve been worse!
Dinner is a new New York favorite/hopeful tradition!
We split a charcuterie board at a Jazz Club (known for having some pretty disappointing food, not naming names…) and walked to Vito’s off of 9th and 36th for a Margherita and a grandma slice.
I could not recommend this combo enough!
Unless you’re lactose intolerant. Then maybe steer away…
Overall, great food, great trip! Thanks for reading!
With Love,
Cara
Cara I love your writing and I love the added comedic moments🤣 “this is so dorky”. Food looks and sounds amazing as usual
