Call it growing up, call it normalcy, but I have never traveled as much as I have this past year.
Lots of hours on the road, too many hours at the airport, and here are some food highlights I’ve collected along the way!
I flew for the first time recently by myself to visit my sister in Arkansas and before heading out, asked if she wanted anything from Texas.
Two-word response: HEB. Tortillas.
Which is such a good answer. Except, I had a super awkward experience with TSA. My purse was held back for “suspicious matter” containing the insides. The TSA officer rummaged through my bag and pulled out a sad paper bag FILLED with tortillas. Before he even pulled them out, I immediately started to explain myself, he just laughed. “You and me both sister!”, he said, like any other proud Texan with an HEB superiority complex.
In the end, my tortillas made it to AR, and I got a “Junior TSA Officer” batch. Not embarrassing at all…
Market Finds!
I’ve been to so many (farmer’s) markets within the last 3 weeks, which I am NOT complaining about. They are the coolest places to people-watch (along with coffee shops, but that’s a different story). Also, you never know what you’re going to find!
For example, I saw the BIGGEST zucchini of my life at this random shop in Ohio off a country road, in the middle of nowhere!
This is the kind of stuff that excites me. It’s silly, but this is what makes my life fun.
One of my favorite markets is Corpus Christi’s downtown. It’s right next to the coast and is gorgeously breezy despite the heat. I also had the best lemonade of my life served in plastic quarts (which means you know it’s good).
Not to follow stereotypes, but I love chocolate. a lot.
I’ve eaten a lot of chocolate in my days, but I don’t know if anything has topped this local spot in Ashtabula, OH: Marianne’s.
For context: I went to visit family in Ohio for a few days in July. It was super sweet and filled with a lot of good food (and wine).
We went to a local winery that had a chocolate/wine pairing flight on the menu…it was a pretty snooty, tipsy experience. 10/10 recommend.
I’m super grateful for having time (for what feels like the first time) to go and visit family plus explore so many little spots. Since graduating, I’ve never had an August that wasn’t filled with prepping for going back to school. It’s weird and it’s new and it’s something I kind of needed.
Pray for my bank account, though! (that’s a joke, but also…not a joke)
With love,
Cara
