How on earth are we at the end of May?
2023 has FLOWN, but this month was also the longest month of my life.
A lot of life happened. Big lows, big highs, both resulting in lots and lots of big feelings.
Along with that, a lot of good food was also consumed. Here are the highlights!
New York Buns.
I had the opportunity to go to New York at the beginning of the month which I’m incredibly grateful for. But I won’t lie, I kind of struck out when it came to food picks.
But! I did find some chicken steamed buns from a hole in the wall off of 36th and 8th Ave. Pillowy, filling, delicious, and the best part….six bucks.
This Texan Cafe Breakfast
In my college town, a new cafe opened up and my good friend, (and avid blog reader whom I appreciate) Carter, was their first customer and raved about this joint. My roommate and I knew we had to go try it as soon as we could!
We got up early and went to breakfast, and it definitely did not disappoint.
The coffee? Delicious, rich, simple. The food? Complex, filling, and so surprising! Their avocado toast had a cilantro lime drizzle and pickled onions….how could I say no?!
Side note: I am a fiend for pickled onions.
If I’m at a restaurant and an item has pickled onions: I’m gonna order it. every. time.
Graduation Charcuterie Board
This was a home run and a great way to cap off my educational ventures.
Some backstory too, I forgot to plan a graduation party and truly didn’t have the energy to do anything extravagant, so I texted a few friends the night before that I’d have snacks at my house after graduation.
In the end, this board was completely gone by the end of some good conversations. It was definitely a little high from the month.
Stovetop Oatmeal.
This sounds a lot duller than what it really was.
Samantha Seneviratne's oatmeal recipe with Food52 has become my favorite way to make oats when I have some extra time. I made these on May 8th, the first Monday all year I didn’t have to be at a jazz dance class at 9 am, it deserved to be celebrated!
Pupusas and Jamaica
This has become a new comfort combo. They’re the perfect size for an afternoon pick-me-up.
For those who don’t know, pupusas, native to El Salvador, are thick, masa-made griddle cakes (essentially a thick corn tortilla) filled with cheese and/or pork and beans. They’re perfectly cheesy and rich without being too greasy. I don’t think I could use my words well enough to describe how wonderful these are.
Paired with Curtido, a deliciously pickled slaw with cabbage, carrots, and cilantro?
Paired with Jaimaca, that’s tart, sweet, and serves as a gorgeous, hibiscus pallet cleanser?
It’s a whole experience. Also, best eaten in the car. I don’t make the rules.
Speed Round with no context.
Pre-Funeral Shakshuka.
Almond Croissants.
Homemade mocktails.
Egg, Cheese, and Avocado on an Everything Bagel.
Food truck food that I can’t remember.
Cold Brew with honey, vanilla, cinnamon, and oat milk, shaken.
PARMESAN PITA CHIPS (you gotta try these holy cow).
Frozen Chocolate Chip Cookies.
Eating seconds.
Eating extra dessert.
and Eating a lot of Lebanese food.
Overall, May was possibly the most chaotic and exhausting month so far of the year, but was a homerun when it came to what was eaten. If you got anything from this post, please go find a pupuseria, and quick.
With Love,
Cara
