Last Thursday, I was in New York City walking around the upper east side, eating every carb you could think of, truly living the dream. This Thursday, I’m working a morning barista shift in small-town, Texas, starting my last semester of school, possibly ever.
I’d be lying if said I wasn’t nervous for this semester, already feeling burnt out before it’s even started. Thinking about all the things I need to do or should have done already. Comparing myself to so many around me when that should never be the case.
But, I remember that I need to give myself a little grace, take each day as it comes, and pray that God’s got something good for the future because I don’t even know what to expect.
As I was thinking all this, I made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on Syrian bread with the smallest glass of milk; the biggest Siti move I’ve done in a while. Her go to late night fixes were PB and J’s on Syrian bread or cereal. I’m sure she also made a PB and J on Syrian bread on days that felt heavy and exhausting.
Anywho!
I wanted to highlight some of the things we ate while in New York. NY is one of the biggest food hubs in the nation, and rightfully so. Food culture is so prevalent there; it’s art, it’s sustenance on the street, it’s used to bridge entertainment, strangers, and friends all the same.
Before leaving, I made a small mental list of things I wanted to eat while in New York, and I believe I hit all of them! A bagel sandwich, croissants, gyros/halal street food, and a dollar slice. It wasn’t a long list, but I knew what I wanted!
So many delis, and so. many. bakeries. We ate a lot of baked goods and I cannot complain!
My favorite part of being in the city was having a few old college friends over for a little dinner party. I made us a red lentil curry soup that was light and hearty at the same time. The power a meal has in bringing old friends together will always amaze me about this life. All I know is I plan on having more little dinners with friends in 2023!
One thing I was super excited for was the street food. Having the opportunity to buy produce at a market? A dream!! Did we make time to do that? No, but we did get gyros one day on a walk. Gyros are one of my favorite FAVORITE foods, so you can imagine how excited I was there was one on every street in New York.
Overall, I can’t wait to go back and try even more! Now, it’s back into the swing of the semester and scheduled programming.
Thanks for reading this far by the way! I do appreciate it.
With love,
Cara
Uncle Blake and I fell in love with Chock Full O Nuts coffee when we were there. Not sure where the name came from, but it was so good.
